When Did Winning Become a Four-Letter Word

When did “winning” become a four-letter word? Youth sports is about fun, teamwork, exercise, creating long-term health benefits and learning life lessons – which include winning and losing. When kids play in an “instructional league” there are usually not scores or standings.  But once we’re playing with a score, standings and a champion, shouldn’t coaches and players be trying to win? While striving to win shouldn’t be at the expense of sportsmanship or giving all the players on your team their chance to play and learn the game, playing to win and using the rules to your team’s advantage is not only the right thing to do, but not doing so is unfair to the team that you’re coaching.

Get into the game -

You will never win if you never begin." Helen Rowland

”Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” Theodore Roosevelt

While it's important to win, it's imperative to compete." David Weinbaum

"Any time you try to win everything, you must be willing to lose everything." Larry Csonka

“The next best thing to winning is losing! At least you've been in the race.” Nellie Hershey Tullis

To win you have to risk loss." Jean Claude Killy

“If you're not big enough to lose, you're not big enough to win.” Walter Reuther

“You're not obligated to win. You're obligated to keep trying to do the best you can every day.” Marian Wright Edelman

It seems to be a law of nature, inflexible and inexorable, that those who will not risk cannot win." John Paul Jones

The themes throughout are simple: 1) You have to try and be willing to lose in order to win; 2) winning is good; 3) maintain good sportsmanship; 4) lose with grace and use that as motivation to try again and win next time – don’t accept failure; 5) success and winning are habits worth developing. While there can only be one team that wins and there are lessons to be learned by both winning and losing, there is nothing wrong with winning!
