Introduction by Mark Few, Gonzaga University Head Coach.
Coach Grier has been an integral part of the tremendous success of the Gonzaga basketball program for over 10 years. In this video, Grier demonstrates a key defensive scheme that the Zags have used effectively- the match-up zone. In the beginning of the video, Grier details why this defense is effective and when it is the most effective. He then details key concepts such as communication, controlling penetration, protecting inside out, releasing cutters and the other "frameworks" of this successful defense. He then shows how to teach the match-up, detailing the rules for each position. He concludes the video showing specific coverages against various zone offenses and schemes including the 3-out/2-in, covering overloads, baseline runners, high post flashes, dribble-overs and wing- and point-throughs. This is an excellent video on how to teach a very effective defense.
