with Kerry Coombs, University of Cincinnati Associate Head Coach/Defensive Backs Coach; former Colerain HS (OH) Head Coach; 2004 Ohio State Champions and five Ohio High School state semifinal appearances.
Having a philosophy you can believe in year after year is important, according to Coach Coombs, and one defensive philosophy Coach Coombs believes in is the 50 Defense. There are many advantages to the 50 Defense. The defense does not require great size and it's simple to teach and learn. The goal is to build a wall and push the offense to the outside. A disadvantage of the 50 is that it is not great against the pass and is not a penetrating attack. In putting together the defense, everything begins with the nose guard. All line, end and defensive backfield positions are examined and broken down by Coombs. Blitzes, stunts and angling are also part of the overall package. Use of game footage allows for greater understanding of the concepts discussed. The 50 Defense has proven over the years to be a reliable and flexible defense and can help your team win more games.
