Todd Ewen introduces the art of checking with the keen perspective of a life-long player and now coach. Using players on the ice, Coach Ewen demonstrates the goal of checking, how to receive a check and how to give a check. Ewen illustrates the 'hunter vs. duck' drill, which is a good introductory drill for teaching the check - including how to accept the check. The next phase of teaching is dealing with the corners. Pushing around the board is explained and illustrated through on-ice drills with Ewen. He also shows how to simulate this drill to be more competitive and game-like for additional training benefit. This hockey DVD is a complete look at the art of checking with the hockey drills you need to help your team learn this essential skill and utilize it, and prepare for it, in the next game.
In this Forechecking Systems video, Coach Paul Pooley begins with a discussion on playing without the puck from a "team" perspective with the overall objectives of limiting scoring opportunities and regaining puck possession. He also shares the three "essentials" of creating a team's mindset for play without the puck. Coach Pooley then introduces the system, explaining and diagramming the strategies of how to establish the weak side for soft, cross corner, and hard wrap dump-in situations. Pooley then walks through the different responsibilities each position will face. He then shares five breakout scenarios/situations devoted to the Wingers followed by another five breakout situations devoted to Centers and Defensemen. All of these walk-through scenarios are diagramed with explanation followed by on-ice demonstration of each. Pooley then shares four drills he uses to simulate game like situations in working the Center Weak Side Lock Forecheck system.
