NFL – National Football League ProductsOverview of the NFL The National Football League is the professional American football organization and was formed by eleven teams in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, changing to the National Football League in 1922. The league consists of 32 teams from the United States and 2 conferences — the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC), each with 4 divisions and with 4 teams in each. The NFL is organized as an association of its 32 teams. It is the best attended sports league in the world by average attendance per game, with over 65,000 fans per game in a recent regular season. NFL Season The regular season is a 17 week schedule of each team playing 16 games. The season starts on a Thursday during the 1st full week of September (the Thursday after Labor Day) and runs weekly till late December or early January. At the end of each regular season, 6 teams from each conference play in the playoffs, a 12 team single-elimination tournament ending in the Super Bowl championship game, in a city hosting an NFL team. Selected all-star players from both the AFC and NFC meet in the Pro Bowl. National Football League History The history of the National Football League began in 1920, as representatives of several professional American football leagues and independent teams met in Canton, Ohio. The formed the American Professional Football Conference league which was an informal agreement to play a common schedule and name a champion at the end of each season. Teams were allowed to play games outside of their league, and membership was flexible during those early years. Two years later, the league renamed itself the National Football League. League membership stabilized throughout the 1920s and 30s as the league adopted a more formal organization. The first official championship game was held in 1933. A rival league, known as the American Football League, was founded in 1959 and due to its success forced a merger with the older NFL resulting in an expanded league and the formation of the Super Bowl, which has become the most watched sporting event in the United States. The league continued to expand throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s to its current 32 teams. The large television viewer audiences has made the league one of the most profitable sports league in the U.S. NFL Clubs The NFL consists of thirty-two clubs with each allowed a maximum of 53 players on their roster, while only 45 play during the regular season.
